Support Group Recommendations

  • According to Self.com, Support groups come in many shapes and sizes. Some might be more structured, like those offered by a nonprofit organization or mental health clinic. Others might be independent and run by people like you or me who just want to gather with others over a virtual cup of coffee once a week to talk about our struggles. Some support groups take the form of online communities and don’t have meetings at all.
  • Here are a few of some of the search tools we recommend using to find a support group that fits you:
    • We love Psychology Today as a therapist-finding tool, but it can also connect you with a Support Group based based on your area, age, insurance, issue, and prefered type of therapy. You can get started a find a group here
    • Meetup is another platform used for a wide variety of things from finding support to growing your business. It is a great place to meet new people who share your interests through online and in-person events. You can join a group, find an event, or create your own group. It’s free to create an account so check it out here.
    • To find an in-person diabetes support group in your community, Defeat Diabetes Foundation (DDF) lists in-person support groups for those living with diabetes by state. On its website, people can find the location of meetings and how to contact them.

Dietitian Recommendations

  • You can find registered dietitians in your area at the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics website. Your insurance company may be able to provide a list of registered dietitians who are also certified diabetes educators.
